I think Religion became something else after the Nation State was created. Organised religion has from the beginning had immense Power and, has evolved from the time of Ancient Civilisations to Empires and Colonialism and the Nation State. Religion can't be understood without understanding powerful institutions whether those Institutions were Churches, Temples, Pharoahs, Priests, Emperor Gods, and so on.
Nation states too derive their legitimacy from Divinity.
