The term 'Doomsday scrolling' gained popularity sometime back in COVID. That we should not see, read what's happening around us because it will lead to anxiety or stress. That consuming 'negative news' will make us negative. In reality, a few years later, we have people who are literally looking away and are complicit in the silence as a Genocide takes place in Palestine.
'Doomsday scrolling' was meant to preserve sanity and, reduce screen time, yes ? However , what are we meant to consume on social media on our hand held screens?
COVID revealed how badly prepared the World Order was in dealing with Pandemics. There was no real solidarity within or across borders. The working class suffered the most as the elites and privileged could retreat to domestic spaces and work from home and have essentials delivered to their doorsteps.
Vaccine rollout was painstakingly slow and, not available to the poorest of the poor in the poorest countries.
The act of shunning 'Doomsday scrolling' is an elite privilege and, is a call to consume other products and, look away from suffering.
How would democracy be strengthened if citizens are apathetic or ignorant?
The reality today is that most privileged folks are happily apathetic and ignorant.
Warning against 'Doomsday scrolling' is a non sequitur.
