The United States has frequently utilized targeted killings and covert assassination plots against foreign leaders and officials, particularly during the Cold War and in the post-9/11 era.
The 1960s plots were often covert, messy, and frequently failed (e.g., Castro). The modern era, powered by drone technology, has allowed for a much higher "success rate" and volume of targeted killings in a much shorter, concentrated period, legalizing them through "war on terror" policy.
While the 1960s featured a high concentration of attempts, the post-9/11 era—particularly from 2003 to 2011, and 2020 to 2024—represents the highest volume of successful, high-level targeted killings in US history.
