Kofi Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation (KAICT) at the University of Liberia hosted a Public Policy Forum panel discussion in 2017. Theme: Industrial Gold Mining in Liberia – Prospects and Issues of a New Export Sector.
The panelists included representatives from SDI, New Narrative/Thompson Reuters Foundation, IREDD, Ministry of Lands Mines and Energy and the Legislature.
My favourite panelist was the bold Mae Azango who didn't shy at all from criticising the lapses of the state when it came to the malpractices in the artisanal gold mining sector and, asked what was the guarantee that industrial gold mining was going to fare any better when it comes to social issues.
